I just uppdated to version 12.1.1. and now navigation with guestures stopped working.
I tried to switch it on again but even when I choose it the phone simply refuses to answer to navigation by guestures.

It's an android bug. Custom launchers doesn't support gestures yet.

Can you elaborate around this a bit? I have been using the exact same Launcher on all firmware versions I have had and it has been working flawless up until now.

In which way would an Android bug start overriding this all of a sudden?

In Android 11, when u enable gestures, they are not supported, because the gestures, recente etc are all part of the stock launcher (this since android 9 release). Google needs to solve this issue at 100%, by working with launcher developers.

You can see yourself by uninstalling Nova, setting gestures and then install it, noticing what happens at the bottom

Its mentioned so many times…

Xiaomi decided to implement full gestures - in stock launcher not in system UI

Workarounds:
  • Install from GooglePlayStore:
    • Infinity Gestures
    • Fluid Navigation Gestures
Or try this without waranty:
./adb shell cmd overlay enable com.android.internal.systemui.navbar.gestural
