Gmail app won't leave the current email!

If I receive a new email and open it up in the Gmail app, then I can't get rid if the email view without using the home button.

What should happen is that I press the back button once - I go back to the inbox, press it again and I exit the app.

What does happen is that I press back button and the current email is displayed again. This happens over and over and over...

I'm using version 1.7.15 on a Nexus One

Have you gone into Manage Apps/All and clear cache and data and then reopen gmail--
