New Apps don't work in android auto unless already open on phone

I have the Redmi note 5 and before that, the note 2. On both of these phones, android auto is not working properly. None of my music apps except Google play open in AA unless the app is already open on your phone. I get the message xx is not working right now when opening an app. Also the Waze navigation app freezes in AA but when used on its own, its fine.
Anyone have any solution to this or experience the same issues. My phone is fully up to date with ROM and apps.
