Stuck With A New Xiaomi Mi5c

Kind of stuck.
got a new Xiaomi MI5C to replace the MI4C that took a dive in a bucket of water.
Currently displaying a "MIUI9 7.10.19 beta" version in the settings.

I didn't understand I needed a nano simcard for this phone, so I'm in the process of getting a nano instead of a micro sim card from my phone provider.

It seems I cannot do anything while waiting for the simcard :
USB file transfer is locked (when I plug in the USB port I got a "to activate this feature, insert your sim card" message)
Phone is partially in english, but internet is very heavily chinese oriented (baidu, chinese news, etc)

I manage to unlock the phone with the MI Unlock application, but cannot install anything else.
goal would be to install TWRP and xiaomi eu ROM.
Do I have to wait for the sim card to arrive ?

Okay...
I followed https://xiaomi.eu/community/threads/how-to-easily-install-twrp-recovery.30484/
with the twrp.img from twrp-song
and ADB (from my PC).
fastboot boot twrp.img rebooted the phone, which has booted on TWRP ... and the touch screen is not working. Neither are the vol and power buttons.

Goal is still to install latest stable Xiaomi.eu release.
Never thought it would be that tricky

EDIT : I don't know how but fastboot boot twrp.img (song version) finally worked.

TIP : if you're stuck on TWRP screen with touch screen not working , Vol- + Power for 10 seconds shuts down the phone.

It seems I've finally installed TWRP ...
