Notifications+ Slowdowns ... Is It Easy To Update ?

Hi,
I've been using the MI4c for one year. Started seeing problems with notifications a few weeks in. Some apps get notifications, some others don't (ie t*nder )
It seems the problem is getting worse, now the phone is making like 5 silent notifications (vib) in 3 minutes without any visual notifications, and I get some slow-downs (killing apps resolve this for a few hours). Notification Log didn't help.
Tbh, I'm up to the point where I could factory reset the phone if not for the amount of data & conversations I would lost.

I'm considering switching to a newer ROM, but I'm not sure what to expect.

Current situation :
Android 5.1.1 LMY47V
Security fix 2016-05-01
MIUI version : (2 lines) : MIUI 7.4 by xiaomi.eu
6.5.5 Beta
3G/32GB
core 3.10.49-perf-g8510a70

Is it as simple as downloading the latest ROM and "install from zip" ?

My mi4c has the stable EU rom everything is working, i only get slowdown when using more than 3-4 ram demanding apps since the device has 900mb as free ram

I have the latest MIUI 8
