Is root required?

I'm about to receive my first Xiaomi device (M2s). As I am an English speaker I have been looking at installing the English modified version from MIUI UK . Is there any difference between this version and the original on the phone? and if I do go ahead and install the unofficial ROM, will this require me to root the device? Thanks Brett

In original rom there is no google play store, you'll find a lot of chinese apps there, and they useless here in eu and english there is bad. Root in miuiandroid rom is not allowed by default. If you don't need it, just don't use it.

Thanks, so am I correct in thinking that to do the initial install of the unofficial UK ROM, does not require me to root the device? Ill probably install it to system 2. I dont want root as a few apps I would like to use will not work on a rooted device. (Barclay's Banking app)

You have to install it on both systems. They are not compatible.

In MIUI UK, there is one button for rooting and unrooting as well. You can root it whenever you want for what time you need, and does not require any reboot or anything else. It's just as simple as that.
