How To Enable On Screen Navigation Keys

I am trying to enable on screen keys by modifying the build.prop
and changing the value of the key below to 0
qemu.hw.mainkeys=0

but this doesnt seem to have any effect. anyone have an idea on why this is not working. I am running the latest 8.1 stable rom for the redmi prime 4
I would like to have onscreen keys as the normals keys are not backlight on the redmi 3

Go to build.prop and enter this qemu.hw.mainkeys=0

thats what i have tried but doesn't seem to work. i modified the existing qemu.hw.mainkeys to 0
