I got it from the xiaomi site: http://item.mi.com/buyphone/hongmi1s The official site sells the 3G or the 4G versions - I have the 4G version. It is as awesome as the 3G version but I can't find a way to permanently root it!

In reply to my own question and for the benefit of others: The TWRP web site says that to do a standard upgrade requires returning the phone to stock and then applying the update. We would then have to re-install TWRP.

Thanks for that. I tried that already but get an error - something about a M5 checksum missing or similar.

I installed TWRP so I could root my TD-CDMA hongmi. There is now a new update available for the phone - if I use the standard updater it doesn't work and only takes me into the TWRP interface. I have downloaded the latest ROM from the official site - but I'm not sure how to flash it correctly...

The red case they have there is the after market, none-OEM version. You can tell by the chrome buttons, they should be red. Those cases are rubbish. They are a poor fit and will crack at the corners after a few days. I can buy an original from the xiaomi website and I could sell it to you...

My old Nokia didn't receive a single update in 8 years, no wonder they nearly went bankrupt!!!:p

Have you tried http://www.gizchina.com/2013/07/23/how-to-fix-poor-gps-on-mediatek-phones/ I recently tried it but haven't tested it yet. Have you install FasterGPS? I recently installed it and get a faster lock.

Got it to work now. After rebooting I got back to the Boot menu, not the TWRP menu as was shown in the guide. By choosing recovery mode I was then taken into the TWRP menu where I could root. Success :)

Flashing TWRP by stazb2 in stock recovery doesn't work for me.

Since installing JHBCNBA 13 the Vroot method does not work anymore. I tried framaroot and it also does not allow root. Are there any alternatives for rooting a TD-SDMA hongmi?
