New Mi9 Automatic brightness doesn't work on AOD.
On my Mi9 with MIUI 12.1 20.7.16 Always On Display does not change its brightness. It's always hella dark. I checked my light sensor in test menu and it works fine also auto-brightness works just fine . -

New [20.7.16] Mi9 - Darker screenshots when brightness is low.
When my screen is set to lower brightness (~20%), screenshots are visibly darker but when I go above like 25% then every screenshot has an identical brightness.
