UMS is slow really slow i used mtp in other roms and it's 10x faster on my pc (ums 1-2 mb mtp 8-10mb) and it's the default for all new android devises p.s. tested both on linux and windows

now that you mention this may be the reason of the memory problem it all started when the permission manager broke if the apps keep ask for permissions but the manager ignores them then you have a deadlock in the processor losing resources until it crush or some one do a task wipe, to thing that...
