I will answer my own question: in newer MIUI releases (including MIUI v5 FINAL) you can tune up zram in /system/etc/mcd_default.conf file where you can change both total size as well as swappiness. Increasing swappiness (to 95) greatly improve free available memory on my Mi2a. Background...

With MIUI v5 this problem appears only in FINAL MIUI v5 (4.12.5) and can be fixed as advised. While the reason of Launcher re-loading/re-starting in MIUI v6 is probably the same, I have no idea how to fix (I just downgraded back to MIUI v5 due to too many issues co I can not debug it).

I meant classic alarms in clocks but it's interesting it is also not working for scheduled phone events.

One more thing with MIUIv6: when there is an alarm set, there is no notification when turning off the phone (like in MIUI v5).
