I believe you have to choose format data file to go back. Backup all photos and data before doing this. You just can't dirty backup the older version without data format.

As said, you can update without problem. The only wipe after update that you should do is dalvik cache, DON'T wipe user data or anything else (your pictures etc are on data partition) - then you could update without worry.
