    Updater app in Tools, you can save file everywhere, you must select it before update process (I leave it on root on internal storage).

    Don't need any wipe, just download and update via updater app.

    Everything works ok with regular update via updater app on redmi 3, without any wipe. Making backups is just for your safety. Status fonts (network, wlan speed, battery percentage, time) is somewhat bolder than in miui 7. A also cannot find ir remote app?
